Long weekend, Conference Weekend, Easter Weekened

For those of you who are not LDS (Mormon) twice a year we Mormons get to watch (live via satellite) our church leaders give us guidance and messages. These are usually great times to find a sense of renewal, inspiration or comfort. It is however LONG! there are 4 x 2 hour sessions to watch and 1 priesthood 2 hour session… It is not a requirement per se to watch all of it, but it is encouraged and we usually try to take it all in. Growing up we needed to go to our local church to watch as it was only broadcast on satellite. I don’t remember taking in 4 sessions as a child but  it would mean we would usually go to the 2 Sunday sessions. At some point we were able to watch at home on cable (if we happen to have been lucky to have it) and we could watch on our gigantic 19″ Hitachi TV! Now with the advance of the internet and other technologies, I get to watch in my newly renewed theatre room with 7.1 sound surround on either my projector or 55″ Sony tv… It definitely makes it comfortable not to mention convenient.  The music is great, and it makes me feel like I’m almost there! Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram are usually quick to trend quick snippet’s or quotes from conference. I’m sure that for my Non-LDS friends you keep scrolling along.. perhaps read, or perhaps groan! Sometimes for me the short quips are ones that are more often leave a lasting memory, sometimes more than the entire 10 or 15 min talk! (a.k.a Pres D.F.U!) But regardless of your faith, I do believe the words of direction are just as important or applicable. But to be honest ( as I promise I’ll be) its hard to sit down and absorb soooooo much at once. Its also a struggle with the kids…it sometimes leads to arguments, distractions and other forms of “multi tasking” which I know is not appropriate, yet happens nearly every time!!! Why do I let it happen? Why do I keep repeating the cycle over and over?? who knows.. I guess it’s the weakness in me, or it might be a reflection of my own level of standards and expectations. I know I’m not alone on this, but I guess it’s a reminder of my imperfections (of which I have many) I need to work on. I hope one day I get it.. but in the mean time… I’m hoping the big guy upstairs knows my heart and my intentions…

  1. “…I do believe the words of direction are just as important or applicable.” I don’t want to get into a giant debate with this, but, tbh, when there was opposition in the sustaining vote on Saturday, I was pretty shocked, and ended up on the far side of Reddit, reading all the hateful things people had to say about the church, about how it’s evil and so on. And I was surprised by the negative effect that these comments had on me, considering the naysayers don’t usually bother me. But in the end, I just thought, there are two messages prevalent in every conference: Follow Christ, and love one another. So basically, I just decided that how could a church that preaches these things possibly be evil?

  3. Great post Greg. I’m there with you and the “multi-tasking” required of having a family with young children at home. It’s not ideal but we do what we can. I don’t have a lot of guilt about it. Also, technically, there are 6 sessions of conference, including the women’s session the weekend prior.
